A new leather bag has an appearance of its own. As you carry it, you may notice changes in its colour, feel and the places where it bends. Some develop gradually; others, like the first scratch, catch your attention straight away.
We appreciate vegetable-tanned leather for the character it brings from the beginning and the way it can become more personal through use. We also want you to understand that development, without expecting every bag to age in the same way.
Colour develops in its own way
Over time, handling, light exposure and care can influence the leather’s colour and surface sheen. These changes are often described as patina.
Some leather becomes deeper in colour. The original colour, finish and conditions of use all play a part, so there is no single appearance that every bag will eventually reach.
We value this individuality. Our preference is for leather whose natural character remains visible, allowing its appearance to develop through ordinary use. We see the colour you first choose as something you should enjoy from the beginning, with room for change as the bag becomes familiar.
The leather may feel more settled
Areas that move regularly, such as the flap and straps, may become more yielding with use. Creases can also become more noticeable where the leather bends.
The extent of that change varies. Vegetable-tanned leather can be firm or supple, depending on how it has been processed and how the bag is constructed. A structured bag will not necessarily become soft or lose its shape.
We consider the leather’s feel alongside its role in the design. We want its substance and flexibility to work with the way the bag is carried and used.
Everyday use leaves an impression
Setting your bag beside your desk, carrying it against your clothing and reaching for the handles all contribute to its appearance over time. Small scuffs and marks may become part of that familiar surface.
Some marks may soften in appearance; others remain visible. Patina does not promise to make every scratch disappear.
We approach natural character with that distinction in mind. We appreciate a surface that changes while continuing to care about the bag’s condition and usefulness.
There is no need to hurry the ageing process. We choose leather for qualities we appreciate in a new bag, as well as the possibility of continued use. Carrying it through your own routine gives those qualities a personal context—the feel you recognise when you pick it up and the appearance that gradually becomes yours.
