Natural Leather Markings: What Gives a Bag Character?

When you look closely at a leather bag, you may notice fine wrinkles, small healed scars or variations in the grain. These natural features give the leather its own authentic character, making each piece individual in appearance.

We appreciate these details as part of what makes leather feel genuine and personal. We choose to work with its natural character, allowing those features to remain part of the bags we create.

Why each piece looks different

Leather can retain features associated with the animal’s growth, movement and healed injuries. When the original grain remains intact, some of those features may remain visible.

This means two bags of the same design and colour can have different surface details. One may have a relatively smooth panel, while another shows more wrinkles or variation.

We allow room for these differences when selecting leather. Our aim is to work with its natural appearance while choosing sound material suitable for the bag. That individuality is something we value, alongside careful construction and everyday usefulness.

Wrinkles and folds

Wrinkles can appear as fine lines, gentle folds or more noticeable areas of texture. Some come from places where the skin naturally moved and stretched.

We enjoy the depth these features can bring to a bag. A softly wrinkled panel can give the leather a relaxed appearance, while a more pronounced pattern becomes a stronger part of its character.

Small healed scars and markings

A small healed scar may appear as a line or a patch with a different texture or shade. Other surface markings may include small spots or vein-like lines, although their precise origin is not always clear from appearance alone.

We accept these characteristics where the leather is structurally sound. Appreciating natural character goes together with being thoughtful about the material we use.

Grain and colour variation

Some areas of leather have a finer-looking grain; others are more textured. Colour can vary too, as different areas respond differently to dye.

We appreciate that variation because it gives the surface depth. The colour can feel richer and more individual without being perfectly even across every panel.

Our preference is to let the natural grain remain visible. Where an aniline finish is used, it allows those details to show without an opaque pigment layer concealing them.

The character you feel comfortable carrying

You may enjoy visible wrinkles and markings, or prefer a quieter surface. Your preference matters, especially for something you will carry regularly.

We share what we appreciate about leather so you can understand our choices. With use, the leather’s appearance may continue to develop, but we would not want you to choose a bag on the assumption that a particular mark will disappear. We hope you feel comfortable with its character from the beginning—and enjoy becoming more familiar with it as part of your day.
